But the single element that doesn’t fit into this plot every well is the mysterious Vasher. Well at first it seems easy to understand… it’s pretty straightforward (see the Non-spoilery part of the review).
The God King is the strongest Awakener in existance – in theory, anyway (I’ll get to that later). BioChroma or Breath is drawn from color, it makes you strong, the more you have the sharper your perception of the world is and the more magic – in this book it’s called Awakening – you can do. The magic system is based on color, and color is at the heart of Hallandren religion. And I like how Sanderson ties it to religion too… the magic system and the religion are interconnected so much that you cannot talk about one without the other. The magic system is, again, one of the best aspects of this novel. It was truly and I recommend they check it out, if they didn’t like the novel previously perhaps the GraphicAudio interpretation will change their mind. And to tell the truth, it was lush, the atmosphere for each of the scenes, from the bedchamber in which Siri fell in love with the God King, to the lavish Court of Gods in Lightsong’s point of view, to the filthy slums Vivenna was forced to live in for fairly good portion of the novel. I listened to the GraphicAudio audiobook for this because I didn’t find myself able to enter the story unaided. When it comes to the setting it’s the same setting as Mistborn and Elantris, they are in the same universe, basically, Cosmere, and as always Sanderson’s world-building is really good, particularly when it comes to history and religion.
But at around 75 % of the novel (I miscalculated the procentages, it wasn’t 53 %) the tone shifts to really dark! It scared me. I seriously didn’t know what I was getting myself into when I picked this book up, I figured there would be twists and turns, it’s duhhhh… a Sanderson novel, plot twists will inherently be sprinkled here and there. And a lesser god deals more and more with the politics of the Court of Gods….
A mysterious figure is doing questionable deeds and stalking one of them for some reason. Non-spoilery version: Two sisters princesses fight to have their kingdoms not come to war with a rivaling kingdom, Hallandren.
